Rewrite your past, change the future

Trauma inheritance, and what I learned at the crossroad between science and spirituality

Did you know that the science of Epigenetic shows that high stress, heartbreak, and traumatic events leave chemical marks on your DNA? Those changes will affect your physical and emotional health, but also that of your descendants, impacting how they grow up and how they respond to challenges later in life. In the same way, whatever trauma your ancestors have suffer from has left traces in their DNA and therefore in yours.

This may sound like a grim statement, but there is a lot of good news when it comes to rewriting the past, altering the future, and healing your DNA.

Years ago, when I graduated from college in Paris with a doctorate in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, I knew I wanted to help others live a better, healthier life. My approach was scientific, and my first job was to study genetic mutations in Down Syndrome patients at a time when DNA sequencing was just a dream and the word epigenetic was not invented. I had to let go of my career to follow my husband to the United States and there raise my two boys. Little did I know that I would come back to my innermost calling twenty years later in an unexpected way. When my marriage ended in 2012, I explored different tools to address my heartbreak. Coaching, Energy Healing, RIM, EMDR and Theta Healing became my best friends and over the years I developed a technique at the crossing of science, coaching and spirituality that I call Core Emotional Awakening. Its goal, helping people heal from personal, professional, and ancestral Heartbreak and Awaken to who they are meant to be.

My journey really took form when I realized that part of my lack of self-esteem and anxiety originated from my own Mom’s lineage trauma, her heritage, my DNA. My great grandmother was married as a teenager against her will to a man fifty year her senior. My own mother was given at birth for being female. Every woman in my ancestry was abused physically or emotionally, and even though I was raised in a family where I was loved as a girl, my subconscious programming was telling me that being a female was less than being male, and that being invisible was the safest way to go with life. Acknowledging that heritage, I worked on the healing of my ancestors and was able to raise my self-esteem and recognize that my own worth had nothing to do with my gender. Armed with that new confidence, I was back on my feet within a year after my separation and started my journey as a healer.

Here are few facts I would like to share with you in your awakening journey:

Did you know that humans and bananas share about 50 percent of the same DNA?

We are closely related to all life on Earth. However, scientists don’t know what most of our DNA does. In fact, only about 2% of our DNA is made up of genes which code for proteins. The rest is composed of regulatory elements and what is called “junk DNA”. Far from being junk, this “non gene DNA” affects what gene is expressed or not depending on many factors like your environment, your age, your level of stress and much more. Therefore, by changing your trauma level by using healing techniques involving the mind (cognitive approach), the body (somatic), the heart (emotional) and the spirit (spiritual), you can affect which of your genes are expressed or not, eventually reverting personal and inherited impacts.

Remember: You also inherited Love

Trauma can be inherited but also resilience, joy, power, love and amazing positive virtue from your ancestors and you will pass amazing gifts to your descendants.

My family comes the patriarchal society of Tunisia and, as I mentioned earlier, my mother was given to her aunt because her own birth mother had already six daughters and no male descendant. The family story is that the first words pronounced when my mother was born were “Here is another piece of shit, who wants her?” This situation can be seen as traumatic but can also be reframed by the fact that my mom was given to her aunt and uncle who couldn’t have children and were grateful for her presence. She was raised in an environment where she was wanted, making her the strong woman she became.

My mother, because of her circumstance, grew up to become self-centered and craving for love. She also was very independent, creative, and entrepreneurial. Her craving for attention made me shyer, her tenacity was passed on to me as resilience.

You get to choose the game you play

Nature and nurture are the cards dealt to you. How you play those cards depends on your own life adventure. You will inherit many traits from your parents, good and bad, but you choose which to amplify and which to let go.

You may have heard the story of the Two Wolves: “An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight, and it is between two wolves. One is evil — he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.” He continued, “The other is good — he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you — and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

Choose which behavior you reinforce, which thought you focus on, which emotion you approach life with. Day after day, feed you own personal “good wolf” and starve the “evil” one. By doing your healing work, you will stimulate genes toward your best physical and emotional well-being. Remember, by healing the trauma inherited from your ancestors, you are not only healing yourself, but also your descendants, making it easier for them to cope with new challenges and explore new possibilities as they move forward.

The past cannot be changed, or can it?

The facts of the past may not be changed but your perception of them can, resolving the trauma that they created. An event may have seemed like the worst thing that happened to your ancestors but in the big scheme of life, it may have been a blessing in disguise either because positive came from it, or because they learned from it and became a better person. Even though what happened cannot be reversed it is absolutely possible to change the effect of past events on the present. By healing your past and its impact on your biologic material, you will change how you experience life, raise your confidence, feel healthier and happier in your body and mind. Ultimately, it will increase your success and joy in your personal and professional life.

You can change your ancestors’ paths even if you don’t remember them

“John”, a client of mine of Japanese descent, suffered from a belief of “never being good enough” that was carried through generations after generations on his paternal side. I guided him, to go back using his imagination, to an origin point that he was not aware of at a conscious level. There he could see one of his ancestors: a maid coming from a farming village to work for a Samurai. As a servant, she was never accepted by the high society who she worked for and was rejected by her family for leaving her village. The healing came in feeling that young woman’s move was a sign of courage, and from that awareness John was able to sense a dialog between the Samurai and the young maid reminding her of her strength, and her dedication to those she loved.

You might think “it’s just a story” that John created in his mind. It might be the case… or not. But does it really matter? The healing transmitted back to him allowed him to recognize his own strength, creativity, and generosity toward helping his community. That awareness changed him on many levels including alleviating stress pain in his body and increasing his confidence and his ability to attract more business and money.

Time to play

Is your trauma yours or is it inherited from one of your ancestors? Are you repeating patterns that don’t belong to you? Are you developing strange illnesses or pains for apparently no reason? What if you could increase your emotional wellbeing, address your fears, and heal your aches and pains with more than a pill? Maybe it’s time to explore how science and spirituality can play together in your life to heal your DNA. Time to write a new future.
